I've received my first very dissatisfied customer of bloggery. Mr. Graham was not too happy about my remarks concerning why I would not vote for him for county attorney. I think at the end of our conversation we came to a civilized agreement to disagree. He did ask me a very pertinent question, and that was why did I write the piece in the first place. At the time I told him just because I like for other people to know my opinions, but in reflection over the weekend, I remembered that I wrote the piece mostly to defend myself against the accusations by the man from Wolfe County that we had no sense of fairness to out-of-towners in Powell County.

I went home a little early today and when I got home I saw the Robin Williams movie The Final Cut. It's a pretty good film and I'm not going to discuss it at length, except to say that it caused me to begin to think about my own memories. I am not usually one given to reminiscence. I suppose I always thought that that was soemthing to be done with friends and family who shared the experiences you remember and discuss. I thought that there will be plenty of time to remember alone when I am old, and have no one else to share new experiences with, or lack the will to do create new experiences. When I look back however, I realize now that my memories have taken on more poignance. My memories reminded me of emotions I hadn't felt in a long time. It was almost as if I was feeling those emotions again. Mostly I am a simple creature. There are things that I want to do. There are people I enjoy being with. There are things that I like to experience. I have never defined myself by what has gone before. I always assumed that what I had experiences in the past had shaped who I was, without much reflection being necessary. I think I am beginning to realize now, however, that to truly learn from my experience, it is necessary that I examine it. To learn who I am, I must re-examine who I have been, and in so doing, I might be able to shape my experiences so as to shape who I might become. Up until now, I've tried very hard to raise my head up above the masses, to try to shed my anonymity, and I suspect that perhaps I will still try. Recognition for one's contribution to society is important, but what I've come to realize is that it isn't so much recognition in the mind of the masses that is important, as much as fulfillment in oneself, and to be remembered fondly by those who lives you touch more directly.

Speaking of memories, how many memories do we have? Back at the beginning of my memory, things seem pretty sparse. I remember things mostly in flshes. I don't remember exact conversations very well. I don't remember how things tie together all that well. I mostly remember flashes of what I saw, maybe a few words I heard. Scientists say that humans remember smells very well, but I'm not too sure about that. Most of the smells I remember the best, other than the smell of the inside of a tobacco barn, involve one woman or another, and whatever secnt she chose as her signature. I still wish I knew many of those exact brands of perfume, so that I could re-invigorate my memory by sniffing their exact artificial smell again. My very first memory, that still exists where I can get at it, is the memory of wondering when my mother would get back from the hospital. She was there with my brother, who was in the process of being born. I was just shy of three of course. From there until the next one is hardly any time at all. I looked through the hospital window at my mother and my new baby brother. After that, things are hazy for a while. I remember meeting my best friend from early elementary school, Brian Wade. I remember that I was standing on the edge of my yard and he was on the edge of his across a small creek, and we greeted each other. I remember a trip or two down the hill and the driveway on my Big Wheel. I remember trying to find the right bus the first day of kindergarten. Brian was very worried. I remember sneaking a peak up the dress of Darlene, my classmate and bus driver's daughter, during naptime, but time has taken her last name from me. It's also taken the memory of what I saw, but that may be due to complete misunderstanding. I remember playing with wooden blocks and I remember learning to tie my shoes. I remember messing up an assignment and correcting it and not liking it very much. How many memories is that up through the beginning of first grade? Not very many surely. I haven't reinforced them over the years I'm afraid. They start coming a little faster after that. Maybe I need to sit down sometime and remember all the important things that have happened to me. How long would that take? Maybe I'm afraid I've lost a few that should have been important.

Does Scott Graham not know what a blog spot is? Or, is he just confronting each person who didn't support him in the county attorney's race?

I was just reading Brinton's post from a couple of days ago, and I couldn't resist commenting. Without indicating which Co. Atty. candidate received my vote, I will say that I am especially pleased with my choice. It is very concerning to me that Mr. Graham has such an issue with the expression of an opinion that doesn't match his own. I would have expected any person working within the legal field to respect Freedom of Speech. It scares me to think of Mr. Graham fulfilling the role of county attorony without the acceptance of values, opinions and statements of the citizens in his community. He doesn't have to agree, by any means, but any first year law school student will learn about their obligation to protect and defend free speech. Hopefully, Mr. Graham will become more open-minded in the future and realize that public opinion is not for sale.

I don't think I was explicit enough in this post regarding Mr. Graham. I should have said that had I received the same lack of support from an editorial source that he received from me, I probably would have given that source the silent treatment, and in Mr. Graham's failure to take that approach, it may seem that he was not responding to free speech appropriately, but I want to emphasize that he was completely civil with his concerns, and other than perhaps over-reacting to the perceived commentary, he kept calm during our entire discussion. That is perhaps more than I expected of him and actually gained him some respect from me.

I don't think Mr. Graham likes me very mcuh anymore, and perhaps it is obvious that I have never considered him a friend. I should point out, however, that our relationship from my point of view has not been negatively affected by his dissatisfaction with my commnents.

As for the speculations about what actually occurred during the election it might be better for everyone if we try to put the whole thing behind us and try not to fan the flames when it's too late to make a difference anyway.

One other thing, please, please, please, if your comments can be construed as being in the least negative toward anyone, SIGN YOUR NAME!

Brinton, Is this a blogspot or a Hallmark Card? I think you started the fire regarding Scott Graham and his race for co. atty when you listed all of the reasons why you would not vote for him. Then, either you or another blogger joked about taking bets on the race. A certain real estate person was even mentioned along with this. People who visit your blog comment on your entries because they feel as if they can voice their opinions as you have voiced yours. Is this not the purpose of your blogspot? I understand that you want to diffuse the situation between you and Scott Graham, but restricting your readers from commenting on your entries is not the way. I didn't comment on this post (originally) because I personally could care less about the election or Scott Graham's win or loss, etc. However, when I read this page, I was surprised that: First, you posted an entry for all to read regarding Scott Graham's dissatisfaction with your opinions of him. Then, someone comments that Mr. Graham appears not to value free speech. Next, you comment on this entry and defend Scott (saying he has no problem with free speech). Finally, you tell your readers to refrain from commenting on your original post. Unless, of course, you sign your name (but only to negative entries). I assume the anonymous identity selection is only reserved for those with nice comments. I'm very confused by all of this, and discouraged from reading or commenting here again because it is getting much too complicated. Blogging should be fun. Sorry Brinton.

I have to agree with Josh on this one. Why post information such as this and place limitations on what your readers' comments can consist of? I can remember prior to the election when Mr. Graham and "a certain financial supporter" of his were reprimanded by the Clay City Times, and Mr. Graham confronted the editors. The Clay City Times didn't retract or "backpeddle" on what they had written. They printed the retraction that Mr. Graham and his cohort had written for the paper. However, the newspaper specified that this retraction DID NOT come from them. They only printed it as a courtesy for Mr. Graham. They had no problem holding their own in the face of controversy. I gained a great deal of respect for the Clay City Times for not being pushed around. I hope my comments haven't been too matter-a-fact for this blogspot. I rarely comment here, but I had to support Josh in his "right on" commentary about our comments. I also agree with him about your limitations on signing in as anonymous. Why do you have it as an option if you don't want anyone to use it? Josh is right....too much red tape. I probably won't visit again.

I'm entirely unsure what to make of Josh and Melissa B. Far be it from me to ask anyone not to comment. It just puts everyone in a precarious situation when negative comments are left anonymously. The CCT doesn't allow this at all. I'm only making a request. As for back-peddling, I'm not back-peddling at all. My views on Scott just haven't changed. I just don't feel like his questioning of me shows any particular disregard for first amendment speech. He certainly has the right to disagree with me, and as long as he voices those concerns with any degree of civility, just as you have done on this forum, I'm not going to be too negative about it.

That being said, I'm not too sure what to make of Josh and Melissa. They comment on an article several days old and within a half hour of each other. Both comments are well-written, but contain an overstated amount of indignation. Josh is now so offended that he will no longer read here. Melissa happens along a few short minutes later and thinks Josh is "right on." Come on guys, do you work for the CCT or are you just trying to make me feel bad?

Brinton,
Don't think these guys are "pounding" you, just some bad taste in their mouths for the subject "citizens" whom have stirred a lot of interest and "buzz" in this county. You have stated your opinion in this blog over several months, and boy have you've gotten some reactions. (from May on). I really would like to see everyone involved in this type of conversations as most just sit around talking and never let their voices be heard.
Good work to Brinton and commenters.
